Christine Major, Tarsier, 2004.
The tarsier, a nocturnal animal, is a tiny insectivore primate with eyes that are disproportionately huge for the rest of its body. The head of this fascinating creature (a protected species) can pivot 360°. It is hard to observe the tarsier in its natural environment because it only leaves its tree habitat to capture its prey. I saw this specimen, with its little fingers’ suction pads glued to a branch, at the American Museum of Natural History. It does not handle the stress of being in captivity well, so it is said. With a rapid and nervous gesture I painted it, slightly transparent against an acid green background.
