Everything and Nothing —
Using systems and patterns to transform familiar objects into sculptural forms, Kristiina Lahde often reworks materials that are headed towards obsolescence such as telephone books, newspapers, and envelopes. With precise geometry, Lahde transforms the text and images from newspapers into a play of distortions and reflections that replicate the intricate patterning effect of a kaleidoscope. In these collages we see repeated fragments of the Globe and Mail. At one time these pages carried information, but now are distorted to the point of abstraction.
Kristiina Lahde lives in Toronto and has a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited at the Blackwood Gallery at the University of Toronto, the Foreman Art Gallery (Lennoxville, Quebec), and Oakville Galleries (Oakville, Ontario) and is in the collection of the Canada Council Art Bank. Lahde recently created a site-specific installation for La Biennale de Montréal 2011.
