Centraliser le patelin —
Centraliser le patelin follows in the footsteps of On a laissé la chaudière s’encrasser, presented at Galerie Graff in 2009. Completing the first stage in the artist’s exploration for this exhibition, this painting counters the rules of pictorial form. Its theme is the square, and the work is punctuated by a lively proliferation of colourful contrasts. This formal work, driven by the poetry of the figure, of materials and colour, takes shape in the purview of landscape and its signs, and in a balanced deployment of chaos.
Born in 1981, Hugo Bergeron holds a BA in visual and media arts from UQAM (2008) and took part in a two-way exchange with the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Marseille (2005-06). He lives and works in Montreal. In 2009, he presented On a laissé la chaudière s’encrasser, his first solo painting exhibition in Montreal, at Galerie Graff. Bergeron has taken part in several group shows, such as the Toronto International Art Fair (2008, 2009, 2010), an exhibition held as part of the VIes Jeux de la Francophonie (Palais de l’UNESCO, Beirut, 2009), the Pan! Peinture 2 painting symposium (Quebec City, 2008), and Peinture fraîche (Art Mûr, Montreal, 2007). His work has been exhibited in Canada, France, and Lebanon, and included in several corporate (National Bank of Canada, TD Bank, Colart, Collectart), public (department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Loto-Québec), and private collections. In 2007, he was awarded the Albert-Dumouchel Prize. In 2008, he produced the Insertion project at Ateliers Graff, which led to the series La fanfare des taches, exhibited the same year at Arprim.
